Rafael Brango was born in 1982 in Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia. Throughout his life he has lived in several cities across Colombia, Germany, and the United States, experiences that have deeply shaped his perspective and creative vision. Today he lives and works in USA.
From an early age Rafael felt a strong connection to nature, which he considers one of the greatest artistic expressions that exists. This fascination led him to pursue a degree in Biology and Genetics at Barry University in Miami. Later he transitioned into the technology field, earning a master’s degree in Cybersecurity.
Although his academic and professional background developed in science and technology, Rafael’s artistic journey began more formally in 2020 after a transformative trip to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The landscape and atmosphere of the region reignited a creative curiosity that had always been present in him.
His early experiments focused on working with glass tiles, exploring how reflected light could transform simple geometric patterns into luminous compositions. Soon after, he began repurposing small glass yogurt bottles into candle holders decorated with intricate tile designs, allowing the glow of the flame to interact with the glass patterns.
These early explorations led him deeper into working with materials, including glass tile sculpture and decorative objects. Over time his focus shifted toward painting, where he began developing his own visual language built from geometric structures and pixel-like compositions.
Today Rafael works primarily with acrylic on canvas, developing what he calls Real Cubism — a painting style constructed from small square color blocks inspired by the visual logic of digital pixels. From a distance, the paintings reveal recognizable figures and scenes; up close, they dissolve into grids of color and structure.
For Rafael, painting represents a reconnection with the curiosity and freedom of childhood. He approaches art as an autodidact and explorer, experimenting with multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, origami, woodwork, candle making, and glass torching.
His work reflects a playful yet disciplined curiosity about form, color, and structure. The result is a body of work that is vivid, dynamic, and unmistakably personal — pieces that carry a simple yet distinctive visual signature.
Brango Art Studio represents the ongoing evolution of this creative exploration.
